Christmas at St Luke’s Mosman: a time of celebration
On Sunday 18 December over 170 people gathered at St Luke’s for our annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.
Nine Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic book of Isaiah, and the Gospels told the story of the journey of humanity, the promise of the Messiah and the birth of Jesus. The readings were interspersed with the congregation singing Christmas carols and the choir singing anthems.
Conducted by our Director of Music, Gareth Baard and accompanied by guest organist Greg Cunningham from Barker College and trumpeter Ian Cox, St Luke’s choir with several guest choristers led the congregational singing.
The choir also performed some traditional French and English carols and hymns. The postlude of Herbert Howells’s Master Tallis’s Testament kept everyone in their seats till the last note!
The Nine Lessons and Carols service was devised by Edward Benson, Bishop of Truro 1877-82, for use in his cathedral. It was simplified and adapted in 1918 by Eric Milner-White, Dean of King’s College, Cambridge for use in the chapel there.
Christmas celebrations at St Luke’s, Mosman continue on Christmas Eve with the 5pm Family Service and 9pm Night Eucharist of the Nativity.
On Christmas Day we celebrate Christ’s birth with our 9am Sung Eucharist of the Nativity.
